ANGLO ORIENTAL SCHOOL
ABOUT ACADEMICS
Anglo Oriental School (AOS) is working in close partnership with parents and students is at the heart of all curricular and co-curricular development and we believe that students can be most effectively supported in their academic learning and personality development if school and home work closely together with full cooperation on both sides. At AOS every child matters and we take the academic, social and emotional development of each child very seriously.
We look forward to working with the parents in a long and successful partnership of each student’s life. The school has a very strong curriculum backed with resource material for all its subjects. The school takes pride in its teachers who work devotedly to bring out the very best in their students, balancing a rich and effective curricular, co curricular and extracurricular program.
Curriculum Content:
The school offers Computer Studies, Sports and Arts, in addition to English, Urdu, Mathematics, Science, Islamiat, History and Geography classes. Students are encouraged to get books issued from the library as and when they require, and read as often and as widely as possible.
As students learn about each of the subjects, they not only learn new concepts, but they also learn “how to learn”. Students learn to develop and polish skills that serve them a lifetime of learning and development. Through an interactive and collaborative learning environment, they also develop the attitudes and dispositions essential in today’s world.
The school uses a yearlong theme to motivate students, develop the right attitudes and increase student achievement. All teachers incorporate that theme into teaching and learning practices to facilitate instilling the practical value of the theme. Keeping with this tradition, this year’s theme has been “Today’s Readers – Tomorrow’s Leaders”.
The school has a strong co-curricular program enhancing and enriching the regular curriculum during the normal school day. The co-crricular activities starts from the “Assembly Programme” which is being conducted daily by the students and includes recitation from the Holy Quran with translation, Al-Hadith, Questions of the Day, Golden Words, Asma-e-Husna, Naat, Speeches, Milli Songs, Golden Tips for the students and the National Anthem. Activities are designed to meet the needs of and to stimulate interests expressed by students and cover a broad range of abilities. Equal opportunities are offered to all students of different classes to participate in such programs by their weekly turn. The extracurricular activities includes different sports activities and art classes that help students to maintain health, discipline and enhance creativity & ideas. The activities include Annual Sports Day.
Teaching and Learning Practices:
Ongoing professional development aligned with the school’s common focus and high expectations to improve the performance of all students is critical in our school. Various in-house training workshops are organized. Further our faculty members attend training sessions/ workshops/ seminars arranged by various organizations. The training sessions are focused and informed by research and classroom-based assessments. Appropriate instructional support and resources are provided to implement approaches and techniques learned through professional development. Teacher training ensures that students are taught with research-based teaching practices that maximize learning.
All teachers are encouraged to pursue clearly articulated and understood common goals based on the fundamental belief that all students can learn and improve. The teachers provide a supportive learning environment and strive to develop positive personalized relationships with all students while engaging them in effective and meaningful learning.
Regular coordination meetings are held on weekly basis, in which sharing of ideas take place among subject teachers and subject coordinators. These reflective sessions provide teachers opportunities to reflect on their teaching practices and learning outcomes and learn from each other.
Regular Assessment Program:
The school has a system of continuous assessment. Teaching and learning are continually adjusted on the basis of data collected through formative and summative assessment that indicate students’ progress and needs. The assessment results are interpreted and applied appropriately to improve individual student performance and the instructional program.
Multiple assessment methods are developed to address the student learning objectives. Parents are regularly informed about their children’s strengths and areas that need improvement, along with suggestions about further improvement and enhancement. Remedial classes are conducted for students according to their individual learning needs. Achievements of each student are celebrated.
The Curriculum:
The curriculum is based on carefully chosen targets for each class. we believe that the student should be exposed to a wide variety of disciplines and experiences. In order to achieve this, the school gives utmost importance and priority to select plans and modify the activities for attaining the required targets.
The topics in the curriculum are Language and Literacy, Mathematical knowledge and understanding of the world, Creative Development, Physical Development and Personal and Social Developments are specially looked after.
Thematic Unit:
Learning is a curios business. Children need stimulating and varied practical experiences. The thematic approach aims at providing the context for learning, encouraging children to make links with new and previous knowledge. Thematic units are extended designs of instruction created by teachers around a central idea. They contain an orderly sequence of lessons that provide a sense of cohesiveness, or unity to classroom instructions. The KG section is focused around different themes that is MY Country, My Body, My Family, My School, Animals Growth, Shops and Shopping, People Who Help Us, Transport, Special day etc.
No formal examinations are held in the Pre- School section. Assessment is based on class performance throughout the year. All students receive a progress report at the end of each term. Parents are given opportunity to meet with their child’s class teacher on the PTM once every term and whenever there is a special requirement.
Stimulating Classroom Environment:
Classrooms are well decorated to match the mood of the students and also to correspond with the scheme of studies. After every four to six week, the classroom display boards are changed to put up stimulating teaching aids.
The kind of an environment helps the development of skills, clears the concepts and enhances the ability of students. It also benefits equally the above average and the average students.
We have mixed ability groups. Activities are designed in such a way that the students enjoy working independently, in pairs or in groups. By doing this a healthy and competitive working environment is created. Students develop qualities such as sharing, helping, cooperating and leadership.
Cozy library corners are planned to provide children with enough reading material. More over, the teacher works hard to make her classroom attractive and pleasing.
Group Skills Training:
It is the responsibility of the teacher at AOS to teach students to work together. We make them understand the value of cooperation, helping and sharing. This develops among students leadership qualities and teamwork.
Each group member is given a role to play and they are made to take pride in their responsibility. This is not an easy process, as the children at this level are very possessive about their belongings and demand exclusive attention from the teacher.
Counselling with Parents:
We try to establish positive and productive relationship between teacher and parents. For this we arrange, meet the teachers, regular Parents-Teachers Meetings, special counseling sessions and model lessons. A teacher sometimes has to make major efforts to facilitate communication and collaboration with parents. This helps to know about children’s home situations which provide insight into their classroom behavior. Secondly when families understand what we are trying to achieve, they provide valuable support and assistance.
Thirdly families help us to develop and implement behavior management plans and finally, parents volunteers make classroom management easier by assisting the teacher.
The school also assists families by providing them counseling to carry out their basic obligations. Which includes supervising homework, getting involved in reading book and providing encouragement and support.
Parent-Teacher Meetings:
Meet the teacher is an introductory meeting held at the beginning of the academic session. Apart from this, at least two PTM each held in the first term, 2nd & 3rd term of the session.
Assessment & Monthly Tests:
Assessment at the completion of each unit is a regular activity. Furthermore monthly tests are held each month covering at least two units. Reports of the test are given to the parents on regular basis in PTM as well as through SMS & folders.
Exams are held in three terms i.e. 1st Term, 2nd and 3rd Term. All students receive a progress report at the end of each term. A consolidated result is prepared to show the progress of the year. Promotion to the next class is given on the basis of the consolidated result.
Teacher’s Support Programme:
Although Teachers are experienced but go through various teaching workshops to improve/ enhance their techniques/ skills and in this regard upgrade themselves to the requirement of the syllabus. They learn how to plan, implement, assess and evaluate a curriculum that is highly appropriate for children of a particular age group.
They are supported by coordinators, who help them to further develop their teaching skills, monitor their performance, give them continuous guidance and work on bridging the communication gap between parents, teachers and students. The coordinator is the first link between parents and the school management.
